Description:
Smallish to medium-sized, brownish finch with grey or greyish head, conical bill and notched tail. Told from Twite by greyish crown and nape that contrast with a browner mantle, whitish lower rump and uppertail-coverts, and larger greyish bill. Forehead and breast are crimson on breeding male.
Distribution:
Rare and widespread winter visitor to the central parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, mainly along Indus River. Occurs in open stony slopes, hills with scattered trees and light woodlands, edges of cultivation and meadows. Usually below 2500 m.
Behavior:
Forages mainly on ground (particularly in winter), also in low vegetation, bushes and low trees, especially thorny bushes; hops on ground. Often perches on bush tops for short periods. Eats mostly small to medium-sized seeds of a wide range of flowers and shrubs, also buds; also some invertebrates.
